60,000 Employees Choose to ‘Go Green’

March 15, 2011 – Charlotte, N.C. – A global shipping company with a commitment to conserving natural resources, reducing waste, and protecting the environment recently developed a supply chain strategy that put its 60,000 employees in control of conservation and sustainability efforts.
Using enabling technology from Verian Technologies, the global shipper consolidated all of its supplier catalogs into one online marketplace where employees can quickly and easily search for goods and services by a multitude of categories, including environmentally-preferable products (EPP). More than 20,000 catalog items currently have one or more of the environmental attributes.
For example, a user who enters ‘printer paper’ and ‘EPP’ in the catalog search engine would see all the available paper with one or more EPP indicators. There are a total of ten attributes EPP products can carry, including Energy Star, Bio Preferred, Recycled, Watersense and Chem-Free.
The online catalogs also feature side-by-side comparisons with photos and pricing to help users find what they need at the best value. Much like online retail sites, employees simply log onto the online catalog network where they can search and select goods and services. When they find what they need, they simply fill up a shopping cart and checkout. The system also provides advanced search functions, reporting capabilities and strong financial controls.
Verian’s purchase-to-pay solution also features advanced demand analytics, which provides oversight into user purchases. Managers can quickly and easily see what users and what locations are choosing EPP products. Through guidance, demand management staff helps promote corporate sustainability goals by providing green substitutes and other conservation recommendations.
“The results were nothing short of amazing. The suppliers with environmentally-friendly products in our catalogs saw a 17% spike in demand for those goods,” said the organization’s manager of supply chain management strategies. “The lesson is clearly that when employees are coached and given the right information, they make the right environmental choice.”
